Today’s #5 story on Countdown resembled Keith Olbermann’s many Special Comments as he tore apart President Bush, his lies and cruel treatment of our soldiers by fact-checking his speech about Iraq this afternoon.

President Bush has decided to put a hold on troop withdrawals, but tries to give the appearance that he’s actually reducing troop levels. He also reduced tours of duty for our soldiers from 15 months to 12, but with a cruel caveat — it doesn’t apply to any troops currently in Iraq or those deploying before August. Olbermann rips Bush for saying troop morale would plummet if we were to lose in Iraq by not fulfilling HIS goals, pointing out that some 120 soldiers committed suicide last year alone, and for them, the war is already over.

” Last year he escalated the war in Iraq, today he announced that there would be deescalation beyond July, yet somehow stood there with a straight face and lied about how he was withdrawing troops. Now, that was hardly the lone instance of dissembling, tortured logic, sophistry and outright dishonesty in Mr. Bush’s latest sugar-coating of the undeniable and unforgivable fact that he is continuing to arrange for the needless deaths of American heroes.”

That sums up the Bush Administration in a nutshell, doesn’t it? On Monday’s edition of Bushed!, Keith Olbermann notes the continued mangling of the English language by the president as exemplified by his interview with FOXNews Sunday:

And secondly I believe the Iraq democracy is going to take hold and — it’s very hard to write the future history of America before the current history hasn’t been fully written.

I’ll admit that I read that sentence several times without being able to make heads or tails of it, but this is news? Keith, dude, they have websites devoted to “Bushisms.”

Next is the typically hypocritical stance of the White House for excoriating Congress for doing something while basically doing the same thing themselves. Case in point: Sen. Dick Durbin submitted last year a $1.5million earmark to combat the emerald ash borer beetle, responsible for killing ash trees throughout the midwest, which Bush vowed to veto. This year, the federal budget that Bush submitted includes a whopping $330million allocated to fighting pests like the emerald ash borer.

And finally, the news we brought you yesterday, that the White House has announced its plans to charge and try in secret six detainees for murder and war crimes relating to 9/11.

Not to say they may not be guilty and not to say they may not deserve it, but how convenient. The trials could probably start just as the presidential election kicks into high gear, meaning if there was a quick conviction or the trials were simply ongoing, the Republicans could take credit for their extra-Constitutional torture, detention and trials. And if there were quick acquittals, they could blame the Democrats for not being enough torture, detention and trials.

Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment tonight is without a doubt, one of his hardest hitting and most emotional to date. Keith absolutely lays waste to President Bush’s lies and rhetoric about the surge. He contrasts his callous disregard for the truth and the troops between his six hour photo op in Iraq and the interview with Draper released this weekend.

Your goal is not to bring some troops home — maybe — if we let you have your way now;

Your goal is not to set the stage for eventual withdrawal;

You are, to use your own disrespectful, tone-deaf word, playing at getting the next Republican nominee to agree to jump into this bottomless pit with you, and take us with him, as we stay in Iraq for another year, and another, and another, and anon.
